Geographically, the Chicago Southland is bordered by Bedford Park (near Chicago Midway International Airport) to the north and extends south to Kankakee. The region stretches east to Valparaiso, Indiana, and west to the Grundy County line.
Historically recognized for its blue-collar roots, the Chicago Southland was once a hub for steel mills and heavy industry. While some of these industries remain, many communities within the Southland are transitioning toward service-oriented economies as heavy industry departs the Chicago metropolitan area.
In recent years, significant residential development has surged in the Southland as the northern and western suburbs of Chicago become increasingly saturated. This search for available land has driven property values up, particularly in the southwestern portion of the region, while still maintaining affordability compared to the northern and western suburbs.
Recent evaluations showcase the Southland’s appeal: in 2021, Money Magazine highlighted Homewood as one of the “Best Places to Live,” thanks to its strong community values and excellent schools. Additionally, in 2022, Niche.com ranked Orland Park as one of the safest suburbs in Illinois, reflecting the region's commitment to public safety and quality of life.
Strategically located at the nation's crossroads, the Chicago Southland is accessible via multiple interstate highways, including I-80, I-90, I-94, I-294, I-55, I-355 and I-57, as well as six major U.S. rail lines. The Lincoln Highway, America’s first transcontinental paved road, intersects with the famous Dixie Highway in Chicago Heights, earning the city the nickname "The Crossroads of the Nation." The Tri-State Tollway (I-80/I-294) features the Chicago Southland - Lincoln Oasis, conveniently located near South Holland.
